2022 World Cup: Fifa abandons plans to expand Qatar tournament to 48 teams
The 2022 world cup can revert back to a 32-team format when Fifa scrapped a proposal to expand the tournament to 48 groups.


Fifa had been exploring if logistic and political complexities may be overcome to expand the tournament from thirty two to forty eight groups, 


which might have needed a minimum of a new country being employed within the Persian Gulf to accommodate an extra sixteen matches within the region.






The Times ANd Associated Press had earlier reported  that Fifa had determined such an enlargement would be impracticable, and world football’s organization confirmed in and of itself on weekday evening.


A Fifa statement read: “In line with the conclusions of the practicableness study approved by the Fifa Council at its last meeting, 


Fifa and Qatar have conjointly explored all potentialities to extend the quantity of participant groups from thirty two to forty eight groups by involving neighbor countries at the FIFA tourney Qatar 2022.


The World Cup is thanks to become a 48-team tournament in 2026 once it’s hosted conjointly by the united states, Canada and Mexico.
