Manchester United resume their go after Europa League glory on Wednesday evening with what should be a routine home match against LASK Linz within the last 16.
The Red Devils lead 5-0 from March’s first leg and, barring a six-goal collapse at Old Trafford in midweek, they will anticipate to the quarter-finals.
United have already sealed Champions League qualification after finishing third within the Premier League,
meaning there’s less pressure to win the Europa League in August.
However, an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea will have stung Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – especially as he’s yet to lift a trophy as United manager.
Solskjaer can change all that this month within the Europa League finals tournament in Germany,
but first the Red Devils must navigate the second leg of their last-16 tie against LASK.
United are 5-0 up after a first-leg win in Austria, and can be wearing their new 2020/21 home kit for what should be a routine win.
The Black-Whites won just two of their 10 league games upon returning to action in June,
losing the last three of these to end in fourth, so it’s fair to mention that their form has not improved.
In fact, head coach Valerien Ismael was recently sacked and new boss Dominik Thalhammer’s first competitive game responsible will come at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
LASK conceded as many goals within the first leg as that they had wiped out their first eight matches during this season’s competition,
and therefore the scoreline down in midweek are going to be their main aim.
Luton Town vs Manchester United Team News
United have had a 10-day break between the Leicester match and this one, but Solskjaer is unlikely to field anything on the brink of his strongest possible XI on Wednesday.
The likes of Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Daniel James, Fred and Scott McTominay are all pushing for recalls,
having largely been overlooked for selection since June’s restart.
Mason Greenwood has scored more Europa League goals than the other United player this season,
netting five of his eight shots on track , but he’s another who is probably going to be rested.
Instead, Odion Ighalo – who scored the opening goal within the first leg – should get the nod through the center , with fellow fringe players James and Lingard either side.
As for LASK, Thalhammer will know that a huge improvement is required from March
and he’s expected to form some changes for his first competitive game responsible .
The Black-Whites went down 3-0 to Red Bull Salzburg in their last Bundesliga game and it’s going to be a case of sticking with an identical XI for this trip to Old Trafford.
